Routledge – Philosophy 

We are seeking a development editor to work on textbooks for this prestigious list. 

Core responsibilities will include: 

  1. Managing the textbook programme to ensure authors deliver manuscripts and companion website materials on time and to budget

  2. Working on manuscripts for textbooks to ensure that their structure, organisation and content are right for their market and that they are published on schedule;

  3. Liaising with authors, and colleagues in London and New York to ensure the timely flow of information

  4. Conducting market research into key subject areas, under direction of the Editor, and preparing reports to feed into commissioning process;

  5. Reviewing stock levels, sales figures and adoption information to maximise sales revenue and feed ideas back both into the commissioning process and to marketing and sales

Working within a small team, the successful candidate will be responsible for the administration associated with the textbooks, including handing over manuscripts to production editorial, seeking readers’ reports, supplying marketing with information and maintaining the global database. Travel, mainly within the UK, to visit universities and colleges and attend conferences, is also an essential part of this role. 

The ideal candidate will have experience of academic publishing, preferably including some work on textbooks, a strong interest in Philosophy and the ability to manage and prioritise a large and varied workload. S/he must be a self-starter with excellent communication skills, a commercial outlook and an eye for detail, who is enthusiastic, energetic and committed. 

This position is based at our offices in Milton Park, Abingdon and reports to Tony Bruce, Senior Publisher
