Marston Orca Books is a distribution and fulfilment specialist, distributing both books and journals on behalf of our clients. Marston also provides Print on Demand services for our client publishers. There are over 125 staff employed in the offices and warehouses.

Marston is split over three sites; the Head Office is at Milton Park, Abingdon, Marston Digital is based in Didcot and Orca Books is based in Poole. All three sites have warehouses attached.  

Marston IT department has ten full-time IT staff, mainly based at Milton Park. The department is split into three teams. The Microsoft development team comprises two experienced developers; we use primarily Microsoft technologies for development. The Vista team is made up of three experienced VISTA developers; VISTA is an end-to-end publishing suite incorporating distribution and fulfilment, product information, rights and royalties etc. The support team is made up of four experienced support analysts, with between 4 and 14 years experience in the industry.

About the Role: 

The role is for a developer within the Microsoft development team, based at the Milton Park site, we are recruiting to replace one of our developers. Responsibilities will include; the improvement and maintenance of existing applications with some bug fixing involved, the development of new applications to support the business needs and to meet the changing needs of the industry, the migration of some legacy applications from vba and Access to C# and Microsoft SQL Server.  

The role would suit a competent, self motivated Microsoft all-rounder with a broad range of Win/Webforms development experience. The successful candidate should be interested in being involved in all stages of the development lifecycle.

The role includes client contact, both with internal Clients and external Customers so excellent communication skills are an essential part of the role.

Skills:

Core skills

Ø   2 years commercial development experience in ASP / .NET / C#
 Ø   Familiarity with database design (MS SQL server)
 Ø   Experience of T-SQL and MSSQL stored procedures
 Ø   Familiarity with web services, XML and JavaScript
 Ø   Technical and process problem solving
 Ø   Work efficiently, both independently and as part of a team
 Ø   Excellent organization, documentation and communication skills

Advantageous

Ø   Experience of Access 2000-2007, including vba
 Ø   Knowledge of web services (SOAP, WCF, XML)
 Ø   Experience with web development (HTML, CSS, AJAX, Flash,
     Javascript, JQuery)
 Ø   Experience with MS Reporting Services
 Ø   Experience with MS SSIS
